The food system is complex with inefficiencies, inequalities, and problems at many points throughout the food system from soil health in the field, to getting the food to the people cost-effectively and sustainably, to consumer education. If the effort to fix one aspect of the food system remain disconnected from an effort to improve another, the large-scale change that is needed to address these food-related health problems will never be achieved. These documents are manuals, tools, and presentations to aid in the prospect of providing a culture and environment of healthy choices.

Composting Material
The purpose of this manual is to provide Harold S. Vincent High School (VHS) teachers and students with composting options that may be a good fit for their site.... Classroom composting options will also be provided and will likely be the easiest and most feasible method for VHS to implement. Other larger scale composting options will require more planning and coordination to ensure that VHS will have enough waste input, labor power, and dedicated management to sustain an operation. These larger scale options will also be included in the manual along with their requirements for scaling up and sustaining these operations. The manual is organized in three parts outlining compost basics, methods, and preparation, and includes appendices as a handy reference. Read More
Program Evaluation Of Growing Power's Commercial Urban Agriculture Program
Growing Power’s Commercial Urban Agriculture Training Program is designed to help emerging urban and small scale farming businesses with classroom-based learn...ing and hands-on skills to support the development of commercial profitably in the city. The course is a series of five weekend seminars over five months at Growing Power’s national training facilities in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During this time, attendees concentrate on skill building focused on the participant’s individual urban agriculture business plan, with the goal of a fully developed plan and presentation at the conclusion of the program. One-on-one advising and work between sessions is available for those individuals serious and ready to contribute to the food system in their communities as members of the farming and local food movement. The value of this research for the CUA program is to inform Growing Power’s recruitment, programming, and follow-up options for CUA graduates. The draft report was shared with Growing Power in February in advance of CUA 2016 training cycle. Growing Power plans to use the interview tool as a regular part of their evaluation. Read More
VHS Curriculum And Teacher Engagement Recommendations
As one pilot of a multi-faceted project funded by a Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program grant in 2014 and 2015, the Institute for Urban Agriculture & Nutrit...ion (IUAN) began working with administration and staff at Harold S. Vincent High School (VHS) to perform a composting operation technology transfer from the UW-Milwaukee campus to VHS. This pilot demonstrates the “Return” segment of IUAN’s Grow-Move-Eat-Return philosophy of closed loop healthy food system. For more background on this project, please refer to accompanying document entitled Waste Audit Report and Recommendations. Since 2012, VHS has begun a process to reignite the agricultural programming on which it was founded in the 1970s—to create a destination campus within MPS that takes advantage of the vast resources available at VHS campus, as well as gives young people a foundational connection to sources of their food. Partners at IUAN and UW-Milwaukee Office of Sustainability have supported these efforts. Benefits of agricultural programming (also known as Farm to School) are vast, affecting public health, education, as well as the local economy and environment. See Appendix 1. A key component of success to such a program is infusion of agriculture themes throughout the school’s curriculum, not only in the obvious topics such as science and math, but in all curriculum including language, art, social studies, and business. As part of the VHS-IUAN pilot project, we explored how VHS teachers would go about incorporating agricultural themes into the curricula they teach. Read More
