Using REDCap for data collection and visualization
From data to dashboard: using REDCap to manage data collection and visualization Introduction: Community engagement (CE) is one of MCW’s four institutional m...issions. In 2014, the Office of CE initiated an institution-wide annual survey to identify community-engaged activities for measurement, reporting, and to inform strategies for advancing this mission. All MCW faculty and staff are surveyed in alternating years resulting in many thousands of responses. Problem statement: Feedback regarding the original survey method (Qualtrics) pointed to a cumbersome system linked to a low participation rate. Data analysis was difficult due to inherent limitations and there was no longitudinal tracking option. Methods: We developed a user-friendly data capture system which enables accurate and efficient analysis and reporting of results. REDCap™ (Research Electronic Data Capture, created by Vanderbilt University) is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases specifically geared to support research studies and operations. By converting the survey to REDCap we achieved measurable improvements. For example, in 2017 the staff response rate was 34% but in 2019 - the first year REDCap was used - the rate rose to 68%. REDCap data has now been integrated into a CE dashboard, being developed with MCW’s Business Intelligence team: interactive graphics of current and historical CE activities drill down to detail, providing tangible evidence of our CE mission. Data is more accurate and easily accessible for conducting community engaged research. Conclusion: REDCap enables administrative efficiency; improved elicitation; longitudinal tracking; instant and accurate reporting; higher quality results; research facilitation. REDCap is an ideal tool for directly linking data to a dashboard. Read More
